Taffy and Me

"Happiness is a little kitten, a faithful dog, a summer day."

   As a child, and I admit I had a wonderful childhood, 'everyday-things' brought me a lot of joy. I didn't realize I was joyful at the time, but I remember the happiness I felt when I was engaged in certain activities or just daydreaming!

   I loved finger painting and making mud pies when I was little. And what little girl didn’t like sitting in the grass and making clover flower necklaces and bracelets?! I also loved my cat, Taffy, and later on my dog, Sandy! (We were best buddies).

I really enjoyed "putting on plays." I would get my hand puppet ( a little lion who was always the hero) and then line up my dolls, side by side (in appropriate wardrobe), to begin "the story.” They each had a role - singing, dancing, crying, laughing. . . but always a happy ending!

I got a Fort Apache set one Christmas (only a certain age group will remember that TV show). I threw all of the soldiers away and just made up stories in which the horses all had a part to play! They galloped, ran, fell in love, and raced - all those things that "horses liked to do!"

   One of my favorite pastimes was playing with a View Master (does anyone remember those)? I would lie on my back in the grass, load the View master with images from Marine Land (the white circular disks had little tiny transparencies around the edge) and when you held the View Master up to the sun and looked through it, you felt like you were right there under the water! It was wonderful!

   I enjoyed hearing Mom read to me before I started to school, and to this day, I remember when the mailman deliver two Junior Instructors - hardback storybooks with nature tales and craft projects. She let me pick the 1st story - and then she read "Mr. Wiggle Woggle" to me.

   I always enjoyed coloring when I was small. Getting a new "box of 48"s (Crayola crayons) was exhilarating for me. . . I loved to open them for the first time and smell that new crayon smell! It was the best! My Mom still gets a new box of crayons for me every now and then, because she knows how much I love them!

I had a lot of fun making t-shirt dolls with my grandmother, Mama Willis. She would also make hot dogs after school and hot fudge sundaes, too. I loved playing with Papa Willis's cigar box full of pencils. He did accounting for small businesses and always needed sharp writing implements. He was a tailor, too, and I loved sitting at the treadle sewing machine - pushing it up and down as fast as I could . . .(I 'm sure that was good for it)! But he never made me stop. Mama Willis could also grow anything. . . food, flowers, trees, bushes and Papa could make anything from wood or other materials. She had a lovely garden with a bridge and a wishing well that Papa made. They were both creative in different ways - I still have a beautiful salmon colored necklace that looks like some type of coral. It is actually cantaloupe seeds that were dyed and then tiny holes were placed in them for stringing! They both had a hand in that! It is over 50 years old.

My maternal grandparents, Mama and Papa Hodge lived on their farm and I loved visiting there. There was a real functioning well on the back porch with a bucket, which always fascinated me. There was also an outhouse! Mama Hodge use to love to brush my hair and she would also let me play the piano. However, as soon as we would arrive at the farm, I would run straight to one of the barns and start looking for kittens in the hay (those mama cats were so clever, sometimes I could find where the kittens were hidden and sometimes I couldn't)! If I found them, and if they weren't too little, I would play with them for a while (I was always told that it would "make the kittens sick" if I played with them when they were very small). Then I would wander out in the fields with one of the dogs, ride the old mule, help gather eggs from the hen house, pick a few collard greens, and swing in the old tire swing out back. Later on, I might climb the ladder up to the hay loft and just sit up there looking out over my grandfather’s farmland, daydreaming, until we were called for dinner. . .

These thoughts and childhood memories came flooding back today. I was walking around outside, enjoying the beautiful weather, watering the garden, listening to the birds and squirrels, watching our cats napping in the sun and preparing to make something in the studio.

Those things that make me happy haven't changed much - My husband and I have now been together for my entire adult life and we have been very happy - so my life situations have changed in degrees. But I find that those things that made me happy as a child, "something to do, something to love" still bring me joy. It has little to do with money and those things that money can buy. Maybe less really is more . . .

Happy Valentine's Day!

What a beautiful day! I woke up with my Valentine, the sun is shining, the sky is a beautiful blue and the weatherman has promised a warmer day!

My husband surprised me this weekend for Valentine's Day. He hired Ed, the "solutions man," and a friend, to install outdoor lighting on the long ramp leading up to the house and around the deck. It is both pretty and subtle. We do live by the woods and the nights are particularly lovely. It is really nice.

I surprised him with a bottle of Johnny Walker (Green) and a radio controlled helicopter. I understand the helicopter will have a slight learning curve before one can operate it successfully! It should be fun, however.

We have a belated Valentine to pick up at the end of the month. Chuck surprised me (again) when we went to see Ron Yrabedra's exhibition at LeMoyne. He bought "The Musicians." I am so excited to bring it home!

Ah Yes, Another Birthday and It is Time to Wear Purple

My January birthday follows quickly on the heels of a new year, and so it seems like an appropriate time for personal reflection and insight. As I look back on last year's posts, I realize that, with only a few exceptions, the most important things in my heart haven’t changed. I have borrowed previous entries, embellished others, and I have also added some new thoughts.

I am glad to be where I am. I'm not concerned, worried, or conflicted about my age, my looks, or my habits! Those things have a way of taking care of themselves with little assistance from me! I’m happy and content with my life; however, I am still curious, and still looking for the next adventure!

I'm in love with my husband and I am glad that my Mom is our next door neighbor.

I am proud that Mom is always trying new things and I am constantly amazed at her innate ability to do just about anything she puts her mind to, really! I hope she knows how lucky we feel that she is our Mom.

I have been thrilled to see my niece, Katie, and her husband, Chris, become such good parents to their little sons, Jamie and Jaxson! What a beautiful family they are!

I have always been proud of my brother, Monty, proud of his accomplishments, his sense of humor, and his loyalty to family and country. I have been delighted to watch as he and my sister-in-law, Linda, have become the doting (and terrific) grandparents that they are!

The animals who share our home (all cats, for now) – Yam, Roundface, Bump, and Purrble, are so special to us and we try to provide the love and nurturing environment that they deserve. Although we lost Shade in December, we loved his sweet spirit for 21 years. He lived a 'series of 9 lives' and had a happy life.

I continue to take particular pleasure in observing my cats as they go about “the business of being a cat!”
They are natural clowns, with a special touch of grace and agility. Their antics, infused with joy and curiosity, are so much fun to watch! And watch them I do!

As a child, I use to love to lie down on the grass, look up at the sky, and watch the clouds float by – I still do. However, now I do not lie down on the grass – it is harder to get up (!) and, since this is Florida and not North Carolina, the fire ants can have their preferred seating! A chaise lounge or hammock will do fine for me.

I am still fascinated by the smaller worlds of butterflies, spiders, ants, lady bugs, and yes little lizards and snakes whenever I see them in the woods or in the yard! And who has not thought about how it must feel to soar over the tree tops like our feathered friends?

I am interested in all of God's creatures - great and small - those that fly - or walk - or crawl. I had an ant farm when I was very young. It was growing and progressing well. I kept it in my bedroom and then one day it disappeared. My parents didn’t seem to know what happened to it and I never found it.

My Mom is a good sport. However, it took her a little while to recover from an incident in the kitchen where I walked in with a little green snake wrapped several times around my neck. She forgave me for that, but was not as generous when I made a little nest in the record player cabinet and hid the baby mice there. I had rescued them from outside in a field of tall grass where our dog had discovered them.

My husband, my best friend, my sweetheart, my lover - we eloped, we were just kids, and we had to "grow up," didn't we? We didn't know anything! I know this now -- I would not have wanted to take this wild and crazy ride with anyone but you. You encouraged me to have confidence in myself and explore those things I was interested in. You still do that to this day. As I said in a dedication many years ago on the occasion of my first solo exhibition, and again on our 40^th anniversary when we renewed our vows, "You have encouraged me by example, supported me with love, and shared my hopes and dreams." If I had to choose all over again - I choose you.

I am so fortunate in this life and I am grateful for the blessings of family and friends.

So, as the poem suggested “I shall wear purple.” As a matter of fact, I wear it often! It is, after all, my favorite color. For me, it will represent all of the memories I have stored in my heart. Moments when I have loved and been loved. It is a good life.

Serendipity - or - What I found while taking the "Getting rid of 1000 Things Challenge"

It is amazing what wonderful little things may happen on the way to doing something else, isn't it? I'm unofficially participating in the "Get Rid of 1000 Things" challenge and it is a little more difficult than I thought it would be. I'm looking through my things plus I talked my husband into going through some of his things and handing them over (yahoo)! One of the interesting aspects, maybe the most interesting part of going through old stuff, new stuff, stuff you forgot about, stuff you don't remember . . . is the little discoveries you make along the way.

Let me back up a little so there will be some reference for the little treasure I found. . .

My husband and I decided to renew our vows on our 40th anniversary several years ago. Since we had eloped originally (a quiet event with only a small group of friends and family), we decided to celebrate our years together by hosting a reception at the lovely Dorothy Oven Park here in Tallahassee. We invited 75 guests and our dear friend, Patty Williams, presided over our vows. Bella Bella catered for us, Scott Holstein took some lovely photographs, and music was provided by the group Tantalas, a wonderful guitar quartet. (They were scheduled to leave on a European tour the week after our reception).

For our processional, as Chuck and I walked from the Main house down to the Gazebo where we would renew our vows, we asked them to play the Bach Air for G String. That piece of music was important to us - The Charlotte (N.C.) Symphony had performed it in a series of concerts during a significant part of our early relationship. Chuck played with the Symphony and when he left for Texas to attend the University of North Texas Music School, I was brought in. . . And no, I'm not a good player - just in the right place when they needed someone for the percussion section. ( As a matter of fact, I'm sure that the conductor liked me, but I'm also convinced that he wished I was in another conductor's symphony)!

The day of our anniversary celebration was a lovely day - hot for sure, it was July after all, but after our vows were given, everyone came back to the Main House to celebrate. The food was good, the music was wonderful, and we really enjoyed the day. Did I mention that my husband surprised me by presenting me with a Nancy Reid Gunn wax encaustic painting? I had admired her and her work for many years and she had recently passed away. When he unveiled it, I was speechless, really. Completely and utterly floored! Our friends Sam and Barbara Fleeger, Mark Fletcher and his wife Sara Chang, and my brother, Monty Willis, helped Chuck pull off this great surprise.

Okay, so now you are probably wondering how this little saga relates to my "Get Rid of 1000 Things" challenge. While going through boxes, cedar chests, and drawers, I found an envelope that contained the vows that my husband had written.

I had already spoken my vows, and he smiled as he pulled his written words out of his pocket saying to the guests gathered around the gazebo. . . "She may not need notes, but I do!" Then he began speaking . . . and these are the vows he spoke that summer afternoon and the love that I know today.

"Terrie, 40 years ago in a church in Lancaster, South Carolina, before God, family and friends, we pledged our love and commitment to each other. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. I remember walking in the pastor's office just before we walked down the aisle to become husband and wife. What a vision you were. You took my breath away. You still take my breath away.

I loved you 40 years ago. I love you even more today. The difference is that today, all the myths have been washed away and I can see more clearly into the depths of your beautiful soul. I promise to love you without reservation, comfort you in times of distress, encourage you to achieve all your goals, laugh with you and cry with you, grow with you in mind and spirit, always be open and honest with you, and cherish you always until I have drawn my last breath.

We pledged to honor, comfort and keep each other. We pledged to support each other in sickness and in health, in times of want and times of plenty, for better or worse, for the rest of our lives. We have had all those things, and you have been by my side as we created a home and a life together. Today, at the beginning of our 41st year in the presence of God, and our family and friends, I renew my vows to you, pledging my eternal love for you, and eagerly await what life may bring."

Today, I am remembering that day, and being reminded of how lucky I am . . .

Hard to Believe it is already 2011!

Well, the sun has gone down on the 2nd day of 2011. We had a nice Christmas and New Year holiday with family. It was quiet and restful. I started two new books and I've been working in the studio quite a bit.

I also decided to participate in the Get Rid of 1000 Things Challenge! I started last week and I only have 975 more things to go! On second thought, it probably sounds better if I say I have gotten rid of 25 things.

This past year was interesting, fun, heart breaking, educational, and my exhibition schedule was busy. I had a piece selected for the "Inaugural Exhibition of the Florida Museum of Women in the Arts" in Deland, FL. I participated in the "On the Wild Side" Exhibition in Dallas Texas at Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass. One of my pieces was selected for the national juried exhibition entitled "Pinnacle," at Foster Tanner Fine Arts Gallery where I received a third place award for my piece 'Carousel Music!' The honor was exciting, plus I received a monetary award! I was invited to participate in "One of a Kind" a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass in Dallas, Texas! Congratulations to those fine folks. I had several pieces in the "Summer Annual" at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts. At the end of the year, our Artists' League was challenged to create art from the recyclable material at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. That exhibition is on display for several months.

We enjoyed two trips to Florida's East coast and both were special.

In December, we lost our beautiful old boy, Shade. He had turned 21 years old in August. We miss him so much. What a sweet, sweet spirit.

He left behind his buddies of many years, Roundface - 18 years old and his best buddy, Yam - 17 years old. His newer buddies were Bump at 4 years and Purrble at 3 years.

There are new projects on the horizon for 2011. I will participate in several group exhibitions and I am working toward the one woman show I will have at the Jefferson Arts Center at the end of March.

I have enjoyed learning something new this year - enamel glass on copper. (Thank you Kathy Wilcox) and I hope to incorporate that process in some of my own work (paintings in kiln-fired glass). We'll see how that goes!

An honest apology

Children have a special view of their world. . . this little Christmas memory reminded me of that.

Many years ago, and close to Christmas, Mom promised my little brother, Monty, and I that we were going Christmas shopping just as soon as Dad got home from work. We were really excited. (I am about 4 1/2 years older than Monty and I was young, so he was probably about 3 years old).

When Dad arrived home, we could hardly wait to get in the car and head downtown! We lived in Asheville, N.C. and it was cold! Perfect weather for Christmas shopping!

We arrived at the store , I don't remember the name of the store, but there was Christmas music, decorations, and toys everywhere! I headed one way and Monty went the other. I had just begun to re-think my Santa list (for the umpteenth time) when I heard the unmistakable sound of my brother crying - make that screaming - no, actually, make that wailing.

He had seen a little red fire engine that he wanted right then (neither of us realized that Santa had already planned to bring it to him). My parents tried to "shush" him and reminded him that he should ask Santa to bring it to him for Christmas.There were also quiet reminders about "being a good little boy" ( that seemed reasonable to me). However, the screams seemed to escalate when he realized that the little red fire engine would not be coming home with us that evening. Indeed, he laid down on the floor, put his head on his arm, still sobbing, and refused all reasonable suggestions (even from me). At that point, Mom or Dad picked Monty up off the floor, the other one took my hand, and off we went . . just like that the shopping trip was over.

When we got home, Monty went to his room. A few minutes later, Mom went in and gave him a hug and said something like "Monty, do you want to come into the living room and say you are sorry?

He nodded, and still sniffling, the little guy got up, walked into the living room, came over to all of us and said,
"I'm sorry I didn't get that little red fire engine."

(You've got to love that)!

We Thought it Would Always Stay This Way

I have always loved being on the Gulf Coast, whether we were living in Texas or in Florida. I enjoy watching the pelicans, sand pipers, sea gulls, and any and all sea fairing birds. Those creatures in the waves, in the tide, in the sand, and along the shoreline contribute to the beauty of these coastal waters. We thought it would always stay this way. Hearts are breaking.

Moonlight Stroll

It is June 1, 2010 and we are getting ready to experience one of our afternoon showers! Welcome to Tallahassee!

It was a good Spring. I sold several pieces - that's always nice! I'm in a show at Kittrell/Riffkind right now called "On the Wild Side. There are several shows on the horizon, so I am trying to prepare for those!

We enjoyed a nice weekend with my brother, Monty, and my sister-in-law, Linda. They got in on Friday evening. I had already purchased a cooking class at "Panhandlers" on Friday as part of my husband's birthday present, so he had a good time attending that and then we came home just in time for their arrival. It worked out fine!

On Saturday, Chuck and Monty worked on a glass piece and Linda and I tried some enameling on copper. She did a good job! The fellows did good work on their piece as well. Later, on Saturday evening, we enjoyed a delicious dinner that Mom prepared (Chuck helped also).

Sunday, Mont and Linda returned to Pensacola and we worked some more in the studio. It was a nice family weekend!

Three Graces

Wow! I cannot believe that I haven't posted anything since the night before my birthday! That is so hard to believe. Some of my friends are able to blog, face book, tweet, work in the studio and all manner of things! How do they do it?!

Well, we all have our strengths and weaknesses I guess. My strength, I thought, was multi-tasking, but I was oh, so wrong! So here I am trying to get back into the habit of writing something periodically. . . not everyday, but enough. I joined the Photo-a-Day challenge and I have attempted to maintain that (go down to the "view my complete profile" on the right hand side of the page and it will take you to my other "bloggeries" including the Photo-a-Day).

In the studio I am working on some pieces for a group show at Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass in Dallas, Texas. it is called "Walk on the Wild Side." I hope to have them ready to mail out soon.

I saw some friends today at a presentation on jurying exhibitions. It was nice to visit with everyone!

It is beautiful outside and I believe we are finally able to welcome Springtime! Have a great day, everyone!

Wow! Time Flies!

Okay, so tomorrow, the 19th, is a big, big birthday, really big . . .
Funny thing is,
I'm glad to be here - glad to be where I am. I'm not concerned, or worried, or conflicted about my age, my looks, or my habits! Que sera, sera! I'm happy, I'm content with my life. I'm still curious, still looking for the next adventure!

I'm in love with my husband and I am glad that my Mom is my next door neighbor.

I care if there is suffering and, in whatever way I may be able to alleviate it, I will try to do so.

I try to be courteous and respectful of others, falling short at times, with the inevitable flare-up every now and then.

I still love to look up at the sky and watch the clouds, or study a butterfly as it flits and partakes at the "local flowering pubs" in the yard! I'm interested in all of God's creatures - great and small - those that fly, or walk or crawl.

I take particular pleasure in watching my cats at play.

I am so very lucky - I know it - I revel in it.

So, bring on the purple, it is my favorite color, I will love wearing it!

Wow! It is so hard to believe that the New Year is here! I hope that you and your friends and families are doing well. It has been a wonderful Christmas and New Year holiday. We enjoyed visits from good friends and relatives. That is one of the best parts of this "Season of Good Will, don't you think?

Now it is time to get back in the studio. (Well, actually I have been in the studio, but it is time to get serious)! There are pieces to finish, pieces to start and experiments to be had!

I would love to take another workshop. The animals do influence my scheduling (most are seniors) - my husband says, "Go ahead and schedule one," (he'll hold down the fort), but we will have to see! (Just this morning, I called my Vet and took "Yam" in to see him. He is a sweet older kitty, but was under the weather. After a thorough examination and a shot (with some follow up meds to take at home), he will be fine. Thank goodness!

Here is a little dog I found on New Year's Eve Day. After making several phone calls and then placing an ad in the paper, her person called me, identified her and she has been returned to her rightful owner. She is a cutie. What a sweet, sweet little dog.

Florida Museum for Women Artists Inaugural Exhibition opens on November 13, 2009

The Inaugural Exhibition of the Florida Museum for Women Artists has finally arrived! The preview showing will be Friday evening and the ribbon cutting on Saturday will officially open the museum. My piece entitled "Gypsy Spirit" was chosen for this exhibition. It is an exciting time and I am proud to be part of the museum's inaugural event!

On the exhibition, David C. Swoyer, Museum Services Consultant and NovaFolio Gallery Owner says, “This exhibition will make the visitor fully aware of the great expressive strength in the art by contemporary Florida women artists."

Also on Friday night, the opening reception for "Art in Gadsden" will be held at the Gadsden Art Center in Quincy, Florida. This is an annual juried event. I was delighted to have a piece accepted for this exhibition.

Our opening is this coming Friday. For anyone in the Niceville, Destin, Fort Walton Beach area please stop by. The exhibit will run from the September 11th until October 18th. I have some new work and I'm excited about the opportunity to exhibit in the beautiful space. I will have 21 pieces in the exhibit. The piece shown here, Form-u-lation is one of three triptychs I will have on display.

I hope that everyone is having a nice holiday. I have just returned from blowing leaves off the porch to my studio and I'm getting ready to watch the game this evening! Chuck went fishing with a friend of our yesterday and caught a 26 inch Redfish! They had fun out on the boat.

I have discovered some interesting old photographs and I am trying to decide where to display them. They are of photos of my Mom and Dad before I was born. I also found some of me when I was little - all those eons ago!

I spent yesterday working on a lino cut. It has been years since I have attempted any printmaking at all. It shows! I enjoyed making it more than I liked what it looked like when it was printed!

Well, it has been over a month since I jotted anything down! I have been busy preparing for an exhibit at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center on the NW Florida State campus in Niceville, FL near Fort Walton. There will be four glass artists displaying their work. We all work in a different fashion, so I am hopeful that it will be an interesting and varied exhibition. For anyone who may be in the area, the opening is on Friday September 11 from 5-7pm CST.

The Mattie Kelly Arts Center is a visual and a performing art space. There is a nice video tour of the center on the web.

Everything else is going well. My husband is helping me by fabricating the backs that go on my work. He does an excellent job of that! I really appreciate it. The critters are all doing well. My Mom has been working on her stained glass pieces and she is enjoying that. She is really doing a nice job!

I started a Face book page and that has been fun. I haven't been on there for very long, but I can see its value as a communication and networking tool.

Fall is in the air! It is still hot, but the students are returning to town, football will be cranking up soon and I'm certain that we will be experiencing some nice weather before too long.

Last month, in order to focus more on my own work, I felt it best to resign my position as Artists' Representative on the Board of Directors at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. I am still an ardent supporter of LeMoyne and want to encourage those in the region to attend the wonderful exhibitions they will be mounting in the upcoming season. Please attend the Art and Soul Event which will be held at the University Center Club on September 24th. Make your reservations now! There will be a live and a silent auction,featuring artwork and things for the "soul." Dinner will be served and there will be awards and entertainment as well. It was a beautiful and successful event last year. This year the participants in the Windows Project will also have their work on display and for sale. Call LeMoyne today for ticket information!

Well, I have to go back to the studio. It seems the glass will neither cut, nor paint nor fire itself!

It is Chuck and Terrie Corbett's 42nd Anniversary!

Wow! Can that be possible! Well, here we are in 1967 signing our marriage license. Two years ago, we renewed our vows and the photo below shows us during that ceremony.

We've been very lucky.

Many years ago I dedicated my first art exhibit to my husband. I placed a small drawing I had done of him (from my sketchbook) at the beginning of the show. . . the notation said "For Chuck: who has supported me with love - encouraged me by example - shared my thoughts and dreams." And now all of these years later that is still true. Just last year in an exhibit entitled "Art and Soul" at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts, we were asked to write something on relationships. I wrote an open letter to my husband which contained those same thoughts, plus additional insights gathered over the years. I extend them again today:

In our beginning, we pledged the promises of youth and passion -- loving what we knew about each other and trusting what we did not.

As we begin this our (now) 42nd year together, I joyfully renew those promises. The patina of our relationship is as varied and rich as our journey, the memories we share, and the love that we know. You are my husband, my lover, and my best friend. You have lifted me up when I needed it most. You have supported me with love, encouraged me by example and share my thoughts and dreams. You are the laughter in my day, the music in my night, and my heart's greatest joy.

Well, we broke 100 degrees today! it is unbelievable! Here in Florida, the humidity can really get to you! I have lived here for 27 years and it still amazes me. Luckily we live right beside the woods. If you walked down the ravine about 20 feet, I swear it is 10 degrees cooler. Amazing really.

It has been a busy couple of weeks. I was looking through some of my photos and found this one of my brother, my Mom, and me that my husband made when we were at a local nursery. We look like we are enjoying being outside and it wasn't too hot, so I thought I would put it in today's posting!

We are meeting with the architect about our "outside room" on Thursday. Actually seems kind of crazy to be thinking about one with this heat, however, there will be a covered walkway to the room from the house and it will extend down into the woods. The walkway and room will be about 10 or 15 feet off of the ground, so it should be very nice in the Spring and Fall. It will be screened in and will have a small deck on the southern end. Since it is a two story structure, the "underneath part" will be storage. I hope we can get it approved.

Well, we have an early morning tomorrow...have to take the car in for a check up. I'd better sign off for now. Hope everyone has a good "rest of the week."

Have you ever had one of those weeks (or months) when you think "Why did I agree to this or to do that?!" and sometimes things just "keep on keeping on?"

Well ------Welcome to my world! (Actually, we do what we think we can do, right? And, with just a little more effort we can accomplish what needs to be done)!

Moving on . . . .

Last Friday was the opening of "Allegro" at LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts and "Pinnacle," a nationally juried exhibit, at Foster Tanner Gallery. In the Allegro exhibit, in addition to two of my paintings in kiln-fired glass, I also have some of my drawings (the "Sound of Forest Water" series). I have another painting in kiln-fired glass entitled 'Joy in the Morning' at the Foster Tanner Gallery. They are both nice shows.

Tomorrow night, "Five Rings of Passion" opens at the Florida State University MoFA. I have 3 of my pieces in that exhibit. The piece shown here is "Celebration Manifesto."

Hello everyone! There are several art happenings over the next several weeks. On First Friday, June 5, if you are in Tallahassee, then please stop by the "Allegro" exhibition at LeMoyne. On that same night, there is an opening at Foster Tanner gallery at Florida A & M University. It is the national exhibition entitled "Pinnacle."

I will have several pieces at LeMoyne and one piece at Foster Tanner. So come on out and support not only your local and regional artists, but take the opportunity to see work from other parts of the country.

Well, our garden is starting to produce a little. We have a squash that should be ready to pick tomorrow. Soon we hope to have some eggplant. I noticed two jalapenos as well! Mom has had some grape tomatoes and a few herbs.

My Aunt went back to NC today. We really enjoyed her visit! She is so much fun! Also, we had another fun visit with my niece, her husband and their little boy. What a joy he is -- so much fun! We enjoyed their brief stay. They will be relocating further north and will be buying a home soon.

In celebration of Mothers Day ( and even though it is after midnight), here is a photo of my beautiful Mom and her sweet and 'spoiled' little dog, "Roxie."

My husband made a vegetable omelet and a strawberry/banana fruit treat for Mom's breakfast. Then we gave her some gag gifts and some real presents! Later in the day, we went to some stores to buy a few things and then had dinner at San Miguel's where we enjoyed a pitcher of margaritas and some good Mexican food! It was a fun day.

Victory Garden, Recession Garden, or just Our Garden!

Wow! are we are having fun with this good earth! Here is a photo of our little garden plus the one that will go on either side of Mom's and our fence. The previous photos are of Mom's raised bed. Charlie is digging, Mom is advising and "Roxie" is trying to contain her excitement for the whole event.

This morning we got a nice surprise. Look at the beautiful squash flowers that greeted us when we went out in the front yard!

We got our first taste of some little grape tomatoes this evening. They were delicious! We finished the bed that is on either side of the fence. I think it is going to be fun to have that space as well as the raised beds.
It is suppose to get hot this weekend -- in the 90's yikes! Almost time for the air conditioning!

Mom and Chuck

Well, my husband, Chuck, has been very busy trying to build a raised bed garden for my Mom, and also one for us. For those that have visited us before, you know that we have lots of trees. Since sun is such a valuable "garden growing commodity" we had to place the beds in just the right places.
Hers is now complete and after adding the final mushroom compost (6 bags no less), we finished planting the vegetables yesterday. He designed the beds so that they would be high enough for us to sit comfortably on the little ledge seats he put on both sides. (weeding was never so easy)! It works very well! Chuck built Moms last Sunday and when I arrived home from Chain of Parks, Mom had the wine glasses ready for the "garden toast."

He has worked on ours all day today with some help from Mom and our friend Joe, and hopefully it will be ready for the mushroom compost tomorrow. Then we can begin the fun part of planting some vegetables. We will all work on them together. The bed at Mom's has beans, tomatoes (several varieties), cucumbers, eggplant, bell peppers (green and red), and some hot peppers plus several varieties of basil.

We have had a very beautiful and a very productive weekend!

I finished my residency for VSA Florida last week and tomorrow will be the first Monday in several months that I haven't gone to teach. This residency was a good one and I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate the students' efforts in the art projects I presented and how much I value and appreciate their teachers!

So everyone go out and have a good week. From time to time I will let you know how the veggies are coming along!

Beautiful Day but a rough day for Bump!!

What is this? A llama? An Alpaca?

It is my little cat "Bump." I'm writing about Bump today because he had to go to our veterinarian's. Unfortunately, he is a "tripod" for now as he has sustained an injury to his back left foot. He seems to get along famously on 3 legs, but it is just temporary. We are not sure what happened. It is swollen, becoming infected, but has not yet abscessed. Our veterinarian, (since 1983) gave him an antibiotic and some other shots. I'm also giving him some pills. He takes them well compared to some of his 'house mates.' He is asleep right now and doesn't feel 100 per cent but he is on the mend!

It is a beautiful day . . .a little chilly but that's alright. Bump will be enjoying this one on the sofa. Here is photo of Bump and me when he was feeling better. (He got a little "annoyed" at the vets because he was so sore). They know, of course, that he usually is a happy-go-lucky feline (with people) who purrs ALL THE TIME. Really.

Glorious Weather!

Wow, what beautiful weather! We all face a number of challenges, with the economy or perhaps in our personal lives but I want to take a minute to express gratitude for this wonderful sunny day.

The azaleas are in full bloom which provides quite a contrast to the old banana trees that I left standing from last year. I wanted to see if leaving them would help generate more bananas. That is to yet be determined, however, although their countenance is not very pretty, the sound of those "vestiges of cold weather," the old brown banana leaves rubbing against each other in a warm breeze, is so pretty! It really is a lovely sound.

My husband is outside washing the cars. Someone has made an offer for his old Caprice. He loves that 8 cylindar dinosaur (and he is not a car freak at all), but I know if he accepts it, he will miss the old land yacht!

Our exhibit at the Artport Gallery will soon come to a close. Those in the Tallahassee area please stop by if you can. I also have some new work at Signature Gallery.

Also, drop by my website every now and then. I try to keep updates on things professional and those things happening on the home front.

Hello out there all you Valentines!

So, on this day after Valentine's Day, look what I got for breakfast this morning! Chuck fixed a "vegetable bread-boat omelet!" It was delicious! This is one of his concoctions. He first carves out the bread, creating the "boat" and cooks it in the oven for a while. Then he adds egg to his vegetable mixture (and they are fresh vegetables) which he has already prepared. It is comprised of fresh asparagus, black beans, onions, broccoli, red bell peppers, carrots, zucchini, and then cheese is added on the top. He then fills the " bread-boat" with the mixture and finishes cooking it in the oven. It is simply delicious! I'm am lucky that he is such a good cook . . . and he likes to cook!

I hope all of you had a very Happy Valentine's Day. We had a nice day. I received a beautiful free-standing crystal butterfly from Chuck and I gave him a very nice piece by glass artist Susan Frisbee.

My printer broke on Friday night, and we went out to find another one. We picked one out, but it was special order so I won't get it until sometime during the week. In the meantime, Chuck came home and fixed my printer. So, he will take it, and I will get the new one! I'm excited.

My Mom came over this weekend and we played Hearts. It was a lot of fun. Both Mom and Chuck win most of the time. (I win more on the computer game of Hearts than I do with real cards)!

What a Difference a Few Days Make!

Wow, I love a day like this! Florida woods are something special. Although most of the trees (beech, water oak, black cherry, hickory) have lost their leaves, there are a few "greenies" that stay throughout the year like the Magnolias and the little Palms.

Yikes! 14 degrees Wednesday night and 16 degrees last night! Welcome to the Sunshine State!
However, no fear, the weatherman has promised that it will be in the 70's this weekend. The kitties are taking naps right now.

It has been a busy week! I had also planned to take some photos of the exhibit at the Artport Gallery and post one here and on my website (www.terriecorbettglass.com), but I haven't been able to get back out there since the opening reception. Do drop by if you are flying in or out of Tallahassee. There are 18 of us in this exhibit. There is a wide variety both in materials, concept and execution.

For those that may be in Tallahassee right now, there is a very good exhibition at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. Tonight is First Friday Gallery Hop so it will be opened later than usual. You will definitely enjoy it. It is called "4" and the work of the four artists (plus one in the Hoover Gallery) is well worth a visit! I have been the artists representative on the Board at LeMoyne now for close to a year. It has been a pleasure working with the staff and other board members. Those '4' artists in the current exhibit are: Mariann Kearsley, Jessie Lovano-Kerr, Valerie Goodwin and Denise Choppin.

I recently took some of my newer paintings (in kiln-fired glass) to Signature Gallery. Please stop by and take a look!

Cute, huh! Stay warm everybody! It's going to be another cold one tonight. Since some of the "guys" choose to go out during the day, I made them a nice "Hay castle." It's cozy and warm. It is on the porch off of my studio which is the south side of the house. Of course, they can come inside at any time (and all 5 of them come inside at night). For some reason during the day, they choose to seek the warmest sun spot and proceed to take a multitude of kitty naps!

We have reached the end of the first week in 2009!

The holidays were quiet but provided time to visit with our loved ones and friends. We realize how grateful we are to have them in our lives. This past year, we mourned the loss of a good friend and most recently, a beloved member of our family. We also shared in the grief of friends who lost members of their families.

It is time to look ahead. Be well, work hard, hug someone you love.

Well, Christmas is almost here! The woods were really nice and there is a chill in the air!
I've got most of my shopping completed (hard to believe)! Chuck has finished most of the baking that he likes to do this time of year. I don't do much in the kitchen. I am the kitchen mascot!
Chuck will take a few days vacation and he will get to kick back a little. He starts tomorrow afternoon - I believe he plans to take off early. I have some running around to do and I think we may drive down to the coast to pick up some fresh shrimp.
I was wrapping some presents tonight and "Purrble," one of our cats, "destroyed" some of the wrapping paper. She was having so much fun, I just let her play with it!

Beautiful Day to Vote!

Well, Mom, Chuck and I went out at 8:00 a.m. this morning, Sunday,(actually it is after midnight so it is already Monday) to the County Courthouse and cast our vote! So think of it, Sunday morning, early voting, 8:00a.m. and we still waited in line. I understand that earlier (7:15 a.m) the line was wrapped around the courthouse! Amazing.

Later in the morning, churches bussed their parishioners in and we saw the huge lines on t.v. It is pretty wild, I must say.

It has been a beautiful weekend after a very rainy Friday. I am anxious to get back in the studio in the morning. I have several pieces that I am working on for the "Art of Giving" holiday show at LeMoyne. I also need to work on some paintings for an exhibit in January.

We watched the series last night and tonight. The Rays lost tonight - or at least I think they did. . . I stopped watching at 10-2 Phillies. I did stay up until 2:00a.m. this morning to watch yesterday's game. Rays lost that one. I hope we have a few more games. Phillies have taken a 3 to 1 lead now.

Fall is Here!

Wow, it is chilly today (well 60 degrees, anyway)! I can't believe Fall is finally here. It is suppose to be really cold next week. It just started raining a while ago. I was going to apply some mica lusters to some pieces but the humidity may interfere.

The "Art and Soul" event at the University Center Club was a successful event. I am glad to report that there was some competitive bidding on my piece during the live auction. I was glad about that. The ballroom looked wonderful. The meal was good and everyone enjoyed the artwork - there was a lot of participation in both the live and silent auctions.

It has been a while since I have posted. I have been working hard in the studio and I don't see that changing for a while! I would like to take a workshop that will be conducted by Steve Klein and Robert Parrish. Whether or not I will be able to get there is another issue! We'll see!

Tonight, September 4th, we will have an opening reception at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. The Pillars Art Project and pieces from The Permanent Collection will be on display. I'm excited to see work from the Permanent Collection and the Pillars pieces as well!
They Pillars Project represents work from 12 regional artists. My two pieces are shown here. The pieces from the Pillars Project will be auctioned off during the "Art and Soul" event which will be held on September 18th at the University Center Club. Admission is $100.00 for non members and $75.00 for Basic and Patron membership. If you are a Donar member or above you will receive 2 free tickets. Corporate sponsors may purchase a table for 10 guests for $1500.00. Dinner will be served, there will be entertainment, a silent auction, and the live auction. 6:00pm until 11p.m - Cocktail attire.

Wow, tropical storms will never mean the same again!

Goodness! We are inundated with rain and high winds. Since we live in the woods, rain-soaked hardwoods (especially after the deficit rainfall this year) means that limbs and trees will come down. Our neighbor has a huge tree growing up through their deck (about 40 inches in diameter) and it came crashing down about 3am this morning. It took out their deck and many trees in the woods. They are so lucky that no one got hurt! We have a lot of little limbs hitting the roof, but no big one yet. Another neighbor lost a really tall tree. It fell yesterday taking others with it. This water-logged situation will stay with us even after "Fay" has passed on through. I made a video from the porch of my studio.It is on Google video. I can't seem to load it here. (It would give you an idea of the rain amounts). The winds are coming in gusts!

Yikes! it is so hot today. i guess it is nothing compared to Dallas and other parts of the Southwest, but we have some incredible humidity, too!

Last week we held the opening of the "Soul Mates" exhibition at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. It was held on Thursday night and we had a really good crowd. There is a little something for everyone. I gave the Gallery talk and also sold one of my paintings in kiln-fired glass (the one posted here). I want to go back and see the exhibit again. You never really get to look at the work on opening night!

The Women's show at the Airport has closed. I thought it was a very nice show.

We mailed my pieces to Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass in Dallas on Monday. I was so relieved to get them in the mail. I am one of the featured artists in the Featured Artists Series which opens on August 23. Michael says that they arrived safe and sound. Whew! My husband is a very very good packer! He made some of the packing boxes. When you are mailing 14 pieces of glass, well, it is good to know that they all arrived on time and safely!

We are looking forward to our trip. We will visit some old friends in Texas and some of my husband's former students. We are looking forward to stopping by Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass in Dallas. I am really looking forward to visiting with Michael and Barbara in person. We have talked often by phone and corresponded by email, of course!

Well, hello everyone! It has been a very productive week! I've attended quite a few meetings and I have put in my time working in the studio.

I was glad to talk with my brother and sister-in-law who have both been to Orlando and San Francisco since I last saw them. They shared some of their photos and looks like they had a wonderful time in both cities.

My brother also went to a meeting in Las Vegas. He sent some photos of some glass that he saw while he was there.

We were looking forward to a visit from my Aunt who lives in North Carolina, however, she has had to cancel. We are disappointed, but hopefully it won't be too long before we see her.

The opening of Soul Mates at LeMoyne is July 31st. Then on August 4th, I need to mail my work to Kittrell/Riffkind in Dallas. Their opening is August 23. We are trying to plan a trip out there. We would like to be there for the opening reception, but may not be able to make it in time. We will visit the gallery for sure. We also want to have dinner with some old friends whom we haven't seen in a very long time. Our plans are to visit The University of North Texas in Denton (30 miles outside of Dallas), where we both attended school, and then drive to Huntsville, Texas (70 miles outside of Houston) where Chuck was on the Music Faculty and I received my BFA degree and finished all but two classes (plus my graduate exhibition) on my MFA. We really had some good times at both places. It has been a long, long, time since we were there, however.

I have several places that I would like to go! I want to spend some time at the beach, I want to go back to Asheville, NC and we would like to make a trip to NYC. So - - - -when would we do all of this?! Who knows!

Well, it has been a fine week so far! We celebrated our anniversary on Tuesday and enjoyed a wonderful dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. I have had a good week in the studio. Had some good firings and got a lot done - amazing considering that I have 4 meetings this week! Yikes.

The exhibition at LeMoyne opens on July 31st. Tomorrow is the last day of the show at the FSU Museum. Then in August the exhibition in Dallas opens. The show at 621 comes down soon and the Airport show will be up a little longer also. When it rains it pours!

We also received a wedding invitation in the mail today. The wedding is the same day as the opening in Dallas...what are the chances!

Well, the screen is jumping, I'm not sure if it is my computer or the blogsite, but I am going to say good night for now.

Well, I hope that anyone that loves the game of tennis watched Federer and Nadal play at Wimbledon today! What a match!
It was wonderful.

It has been a nice 4th of July weekend. Thursday we started off by visiting a restaurant where a friend of ours was performing. We really enjoyed hearing Steve play and visiting with Marianne and Charles.
On Friday our good friends and neighbors, Jean and Jerry, had a 4th of July cook-out. We stopped over for a minute to say "hello" (My Mom was there, too) and then we had to leave to attend the opening of ANJE III (All Media National Juried Exhibition) at 621 Gallery. I had a piece accepted in the show. We also visited with friends at several other galleries at Railroad Square. It was First Friday. A lot of people were out celebrating the 4th, but there were some who did do the Gallery Hop. We returned home and the cook-out was still going on. We had an opportunity to visit a little plus Jean sent us home with the absolutely best made-from-scratch (including her own little limes that she grows) Key Lime pie I have ever tasted! Way to go Jean! They also said that my Mom had made the best baked beans for the cook-out. She is a great cook. I did not get that gene. My husband, on the other hand, is an excellent cook, too. I'm lucky.

Saturday, Chuck and I both worked in the studio. We actually got quite a bit of work done. . . thank goodness! I have a number of things that are distracting me from my studio work. I have several shows in August, one in Dallas, and one here. My schedule is getting full and I don't mean studio time! Steven Pressfield calls these distractions "Resistance" in his book, The War of Art (I call them scheduled meetings and projects). There are always distractions. The question remains whether we have the strength and professionalism to keep distraction, or resistance from preventing us from doing our work - putting in our time - creating. It is an on-going battle for artists, as those of you involved in the visual or performing arts know!
Anyway, I was glad to get a lot done yesterday so I could watch Wimbledon today! I'm looking forward to a busy week. I do love working hard in the studio and I try not to let too many other things prevent me from putting in my time!

Tonight we held the opening for "Women Artists" at the Artport Gallery. The opening reception was very nice and we had a good turn-out! The show looked wonderful. Kudos to Leslie, Janice, and Susie who did a fine job hanging it. This event was sponsored by the Council on Cultural and the Arts. The 12 women artists were comprised of the Artists' Steering Committee for the Florida Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

I enjoyed meeting some new people and talking to some old friends. It was a nice balance. One of the pieces I have in the show will be going home with someone else! That piece is posted here.

In two weeks, we will have the opening for the All-Media National Juried Exhibition at 621 Gallery. That should be fun, too.

Well, I need to get some shut-eye so that I can get some painting done over the next couple of days. I also need to mail some work to Dallas. Let's all go out and have a nice weekend!

Hi Everyone!

What a week it has been! Art, then meetings, then art, then meetings!

"Go Green" opened at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Art! - we had a good crowd and the exhibit is both colorful, interesting and thought-provoking. Our challenge was to say something about the environment, recycling, re-plenishing, preserving green spaces, making green decisions, etc. A county official gave a brief statement and then the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes and honorable mentions were awarded. Representing the Professional Development Committee for the Artists' League, I was delighted to present the Professional Development award to this year's recipient, Mari Knight.

My (recycling and re-purposing) contribution to our "Go Green" exhibit is seen here. I can honestly say that it is the first time that I ever enjoyed the laughter of fellow artists and patrons as they looked at my work! It was a fun evening. My husband and I also purchased a piece that we will enjoy for many years to come. After the reception we enjoyed margaritas with friends at 'San Miguels.'

Next Friday we have an opening at the Artport Gallery. It will be comprised of the artist steering committee for the Florida Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. I will have 3 of my paintings in kiln-fired glass at that exhibition. Then in 2 weeks, there will be an opening for All-Media National Juried Exhibtion (ANJE III) at the 621 Gallery. I was notified just last night that my work was accepted. So that is exciting. For those who are familiar with the journal Glass Craftsmen, there is a nice article about the online exhibition entitled "Self Portraits in Glass by Warm Glass Artists." Cynthia Morgan's terrific piece is featured on the cover. Kudos to Cynthia Oliver for all of her effort (and patience) in putting the exhibition together. She also initiated and produced a self publishing book about the exhibit! the online address is:

Well, here comes summer! We went to our nephew's wedding in Asheville, NC last weekend. The weather was perfect. Then when we came back, we found out that it is still nice here. The humidity is low and there is a slight breeze.

I am still working on pieces for upcoming exhibitions:

The Women's Exhibition sponsored by the Florida Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts at the airport gallery, "Go Green" by the Artists' League at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts, and the Soulmates exhibition at LeMoyne. I am excited about the work for the Featured Artists series at Kittrell/Riffkind and I am working toward that event. My Pillars Projects are completed and already in place at local businesses.

I have 6 pieces at The Bender Gallery in Asheville. It is a beautiful space and we enjoyed our visit there last weekend.

The weather is suppose to be beautiful this weekend. ! We are looking forward to a visit from my brother and his wife. Then we will celebrate Mother's Day on Saturday night. Chuck, my husband, will cook dinner for us all. I may prepare a little dessert. It will be a lot of fun.

We are also looking forward to our nephew's wedding next weekend. The rehearsal dinner is Friday night and the wedding is Saturday.

The statewide juried event FSAS ( Florida Seniors Art Showcase) will open in galleries around the Capital City next week. I will have work at The 621 Gallery and at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts.

The Pillars Project, a fund raiser for LeMoyne, has also been put in place. The pieces from different artists are placed in businesses around town. They will be on display all summer. Then, in September at the University Club, they will be auctioned off. There will be maps of the businesses where the artwork is located, so that people can stop by to see them.

In June, artists for the FL Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts will have an exhibition at the Artport Gallery. Then in August, I will have work in the Soul Mates exhibition at LeMoyne. Later that month, I will be one of the featured artists at Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass in Dallas, Texas.

I'm excited to get back in the studio and try out my new kiln. We drove to the Jen Ken Factory a couple of weeks ago when they had finished building it, to pick it up. It was fun to see all of those new kilns being built!

Then tonight at our Artists' League meeting for the Florida State University Museum, we had a guest speaker who explained how to do panoramic installations. It was fascinating to watch the process of photographing in 10 degree segments and then to "stitch and blend" the photographs so that you could go around the room creating a panoramic view of the entire room or rotating a 3 dimensional piece of art so that it "turned" for viewing.

Now, all I have to do is buy the software and learn how to use it ---- Right!

It is suppose to rain later this week. We had another lovely day today - looked like we might get some showers, but it didn't happen.

Is Spring finally here?!

Well, it has been an absolutely gorgeous day!
Wow, I love it when it is like this. It will be 80 degrees again tomorrow. We are lucky to have such beautiful weather.

Chuck made some delicious soup for us tonight. I am lucky to have a husband who is such a good cook! He enjoys cooking and is quite talented.

He also does nice glasswork and will have some pieces in the "Climate Summit" which will be held at the Civic Center tomorrow. He made some nice and unusual platters from recycled glass.

I completed a few paintings this week and have a good start on several others. Time is flying by! Chuck will be making the metal backs for them. We bought the supplies last week. Remembering

I want to take a moment to remember a good friend of ours. His name was Joe. He passed away last Friday. I sent a note to his sister and Mother which said, "Sometimes, if we are lucky, someone comes into our life that will forever occupy a special place. Joe was such a man. He was one-of-a-kind. His quick wit, boisterous laugh, the twinkle in his eyes when he was up to mischief, and his boyish charm can never be replaced. He was a good and true friend - brutally honest when necessary, but with a tender heart and a generous spirit not easily matched. His friends knew of the love he had for his family - and he loved all of God's creatures but especially his dogs. Let us take comfort as we remember the unique and special relationship we had with him. While the mention of his name may bring tears to our eyes, memories of him will bring a smile to our heart. "

Well, today (actually yesterday, as it is now after midnight and early Thursday morning) was indeed a beautiful one! The weather was so nice. It did start out a little shaky, however!

I was suppose to attend a Tai Chi class with a friend of mine. For starters, I had a headache, then I lost my purse so I didn't have my drivers license and of course I didn't want to drive without it! By then I was going to be late for class. My Mom came by to help me look for my purse (what a Mom, huh)! anyway, I finally found it, was late for class, but had fun anyway!

We ordered another kiln from Jen Ken last week and I am excited! The electrician is coming by tomorrow to install a new plug. The kiln should be ready in about 4 weeks.

We went to Cocoa last Thursday night and bought glass at Art Glass House on Friday. I love to go there to buy glass products. We stayed at Cocoa Beach on Friday night and went to our favorite restaurant down there! Nice little business trip!

The new cats, 'Bump' and 'Purrble' are continuing to be fun - some of my older cats are not quite as enthusiastic, but they are adjusting.
They are mischievous as you can discern from the photo below! That is 'Purrble'

Wow! Time is flying by! I am finally able to make a dent in some of the work that is due, however, I still have miles to go! Two exhibition/projects in April, one in May, two exhibitions in June and two in August! That should keep me in the studio for the Spring and Summer! Its all good, however. I'm glad to be participating in each event. I will post here and on my website the dates and titles for each exhibition.

Well, we have two new cats, both are rescues. They are entirely different in appearance and personality. "Bump" is a yellow and white four year-old fellow with a wonderfully mellow disposition. Well, he is more mellow now than initially . . . . he was something of a bully toward the other cats when he arrived on the scene. He does have a great personality and is a lot of fun. " Purrble" is a little long-haired black female about 10 months old. She arrived on my birthday in the pouring rain! She was a little sad sack to look at. She has a really cute and funny personality also. She does tend to be a little fearful of my other cats. (we have four older cats plus Bump and Purrble). Anyway, we have had both altered and they are happily ensconced in the Corbett household! Purrble is very playful and we have had one bad art accident. She knocked over a large ceramic sculpture of a cat! I was sick. I have several pieces by the artist. I had placed it on the hearth of the fireplace, so it really is my fault. They are good for the most part, and I will be more careful from now on. It is a little more hazardous since we have tile floors instead of carpeting.

It is raining today. We are suppose to have storms later on in the evening. I have an Artists League meeting at the museum, so I hope it doesn't get too bad. Speaking of that, I'd better sign off for now.

Yesterday I finally worked in the studio for a while! Okay, so mostly it was clean-up, but hey, after having the flu all this time, it was just fine. Sure I could hardly get out of the bed this morning, but it was kind of nice to sleep in while it was raining! (It rained all night with some bad thunderstorms in the area. A twister touched down west of here. No injuries thank goodness).

Today was beautiful! It was warm, sunny, and very pleasant. Tonight it is freezing again!

I have an appointment tomorrow and then I will paint all afternoon. Hopefully, I will make some headway. I have a tendency to over-commit, however, if you want to paint and you want to exhibit, you have to keep those doors open, right!?
Well, I need to go and do a little reading before bed. Have a nice Tuesday, Everyone!

Wow, can it be the middle of February already! Unbelieveable!

I have been remiss in my blogging. As you may know, my website went online at the end of last year and I spent some time learning how to find my way around the site and update information. As a reminder my website address is http://www.terriecorbettglass.com/
I will update activities and events so do stop by!

At the beginning of the year, I felt that things were relatively quiet. I was in the bed with the flu for several weeks, felt better for two days and then relapsed! Not fun. I am finally 'getting back down to the planet earth' and feel better. I have missed valuable studio time and I need to get back in the swing of things. The year is mapped out pretty evenly with exhibitions. Right now I am in the Synergy Invitational at the Claude Pepper Museum. In March, I plan to participate in a Self Portraits, an online exhibit which originated through the Warm Glass website. Cynthia Oliver is heading up that project as she did last year. Please stop by her site and take a look later next month.

In January, I submitted a proposal for the Pillars Project - It was accepted and I will have more information on that later. In April, I will participate in Chain of Parks, the nationally juried exhibition for the LeMoyne Center for Visual Arts. Then, In May we go to North Carolina for our nephew's wedding. In June I will participate, as a member of the Artists' League, in an exhibition at the Florida State Museum of Fine Arts. Then in August, I will be one of the Featured Artists at Kittrell/Riffkind in Dallas, Texas. That month, I will also have work in an exhibit called Soul Mates: a study in Relationships at LeMoyne here in Tallahassee. I have one more exhibition in June that is not yet finalized. More on that later.

My husband fixed a wonderful dinner for my Mom and me on Valentine's Day! He also brought us flowers. He's always so thoughtful. I am happy to say that his wedding ring was returned. He lost it at our local Publix. Someone found it and turned it in. Wasn't that nice!

Feline My Way

I hope everyone is having a good 2008! It has been fun so far. We are looking forward to some exciting events as we go forward into the new year. There will be some very good exhibits, some important family functions to attend and some exciting progress with the artwork!

Here is a photo of the world's greatest cat toy, a remote controlled tarantula, and my cat "Yam." We enjoyed a visit with family in Pensacola. It was a very nice holiday and new year. Mom did get the flu and was unable to attend but we made plenty of videos and photographs. She is doing much better now!

My good friend Patty and I share a January birthday. We celebrated along with my husband and her father at the University Club last night. What a wonderful meal! The Chef came to the table to inquire about our food and was kind enough to share some of his culinary expertise! Delicious!

I will be participating in some events this year. First off is the 'Pillars Project' sponsored by the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. Proposals have been submitted and we were notified of selection for the project. The artwork will be mounted in different venues around the city and then, in September, they will be auctioned and proceeds will benefit LeMoyne. This should be an interesting exhibit.

I am reminded that it was just about a year ago that I began writing my blog!

I hope that everyone has enjoyed a Happy Thanksgiving. We enjoyed a nice day at home. Our meal was terrific, the weather was beautiful and the company unbeatable! We got to speak with family and friends that we were unable to be with and that made it doubly nice! It was a good day to count our blessings.

We "kicked back" today. It was nice to relax, watch a little football and snack on Thanksgiving leftovers! Tomorrow, we have some errands to run. I also have to 'gallery sit' at South of Soho and then we will come home and watch the FSU/Florida game.

I hope everyone is enjoying some quality time with family and friends.

Please keep my nephew, and all of our men in the armed services, in your prayers.

New Work at Thomas Eads Fine Art - Paintings in Kiln-fired Glass

Most of my work consists of paintings in kiln-fired glass. I prefer to use Paradise Paint with the pine old medium. I am primarily a painter - glass is my canvas. This process created quite a learning curve for me. For those who have painted before, you are familiar with the pleasure of "pushing around" a nice buttery Windsor Newton pigment. That particular sensuous experience will take a slight detour when using these pigments. I do enjoy painting with them now, and they are as close as one will get to achieving the color fields and combinations that you are use to getting from regular pigments. To begin with, they have the consistency of moist drywall. Thinning them too much will dilute the color you want to achieve. They way you apply the paint will be different. For instance, if you use a quick brush stroke to lay in oil or acrylic on a canvas, then it will stay there until you cover it, modify it, change its color or shape, etc. When you apply paradise paint, it will be subjected to heat. You must make a concerted effort to ensure that you apply enough paint, so that it will maintain its integrity when the piece is fired. Remember, the enamels will flow. If you have used too much medium or not enough paint, the color will be diluted or it may even be gone. The challenge is to develop a way of applying the paint so that you can predict or anticipate what will happen. You must also vent the kiln for the reds to stay true.

You may use whatever painting implements you want to use, brushes, palette knives, etc. You have to watch the enamels, learn what they will do, and also, what they will not do. You can create a painting, which is my goal, or you can use the enamels to create a surface embellishment for your glass piece. They will work satisfactorily in any event.

Remember, these are lead based paints. You must exercise care when painting with them - your studio needs to be well ventilated, avoid getting them on your skin, and you should not eat or drink when using them.

A new week and lots to do!

Well, I am happy to say that the gallery sold this piece. A lovely couple bought it for their anniversary! They came to the opening last week.

I am back in the studio after a few days off. I did have one little kiln crisis but I think that has been resolved. The kiln goblins came a couple of days early! Hopefully I tricked them!

Here is my little cat Yam. Actually, he is not little, however, he fit himself in this heartshaped monkey-pod bowl. He was sound asleep on the counter! Had to take a photo.

Well, it is time to go walking. My husband and I walk at the mall every evening. We began walking in the mall during the heat of the summer. He walks further than I do, so when I finish, I just go to the book store, grab a "skinny" latte and read until he completes his laps. Bye for now. Everyone have a good evening!

Well, it is my brother's birthday! I wished him a very happy birthday earlier in the day. So we have two birthdays in October! Mom's and his. I mailed his present to him. I hope he likes it! I have a feeling he will.

We enjoyed a nice weekend, but it is time to get back in the studio and get to work!

My husband received a note from a friend and former student. It was so nice to hear from him.

Now that it is Fall, we are getting some cooler weather, thank goodness! It has been a very hot summer. Dry, too. My little cat, Yam, is sitting here beside me. He is interested in the computer, apparently!

Well, I am happy to say that after all the rain yesterday, my opening at Thomas Eads Fine Art last night was well-attended! I enjoyed meeting those people who had previously purchased my work as well as those who were buying or were considering buying some of the new pieces in this show. I also enjoyed seeing some old friends I hadn't seen in a while! It was a very nice evening.

I am looking forward to dinner with friends this evening. My husband is cooking one of his delicious meals (I will make a salad). He is by far the better cook! It will, no doubt, prove to be yet another enjoyable get-together.

Now that the exhibition has opened, I am re-energized and cannot wait to get back in the studio. I think I will enjoy a relaxing weekend and then jump back in on Monday morning. Well, I actually slipped into the studio earlier today -- can't wait!

This evening, my husband and I attended a gallery talk, a members meeting, and a silent auction at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. We had a wonderful evening. All 5 of the exhibiting artists gave very interesting presentations. The evening ended on a wonderful note. We were bidding on two pieces in the silent auction. It did get a little competitive, and at one point I put a smiley face beside my bid so that the other bidder would hold no hard feelings! We left with both pieces - a Roland Hocket print and a Nancy Reid Gunn ink drawing! My husband then surprised me by telling me he had purchased one of the Ron Yrabedra paintings in the exhibit! Am I just the luckiest wife or what! It seems like Christmas in October. Amazing! I 'm just thrilled. What a wonderful week, wonderful month, wonderful year, it is turning out to be.

A new week begins . . .

Our week is off to a very good start. Tonight, we had dinner with our close friends, Kerry and Glenn. We have been trying to get together for a while now. We haven't seen them since our anniversary event in August.
Day after tomorrow, we will go to a gallery talk at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. Then, on the weekend, we may celebrate my Mom's birthday a little early (her real birthday is next Wednesday).
Next week I also have to take my paintings to the gallery. The opening is on Friday night from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
My nephew is overseas. We received a sweet email from him last night. Everyone please keep him in your prayers.

First Friday Gallery Hop in Tallahassee

It was an interesting "First Friday Gallery Hop" this month. The skies threatened and then it poured!

Earlier in the day, I attended a meeting at the University Club. As a member of the Artists' Steering Committee for the Florida Committee/ National Museum of Women in the Arts, we discuss a variety of ways to promote women in the arts while providing exhibition opportunities for our local members. Since FSU also had a home game on Saturday, the traffic was already heavy Friday afternoon as fans came to Tallahassee for the "Downtown Get-down" on Friday night. Combine that traffic with the Gallery Hop plus the rain and you have a few delays!

My husband and I went to see the Tallahassee Collects exhibit at City Hall. I had a piece in the exhibit. The Council on Cultural and the Arts (COCA) displayed selected work from the collections of a variety of professionals in Tallahassee. The collected works came from attornies, physicians, commissioners, builders, realtors, insurance executives, etc. It was also nice to see some of the artists and meet some of the owners of the pieces. Next, and after the torrential downpour, we went to LeMoyne to see the exhibit entitled "Encore." It featured four very fine artists and was a beautiful show.

On First Fridays we are usually at the South of Soho Gallery , an artists' co-op, in Railroad Square where we exhibit as members. However, for the first time since we became members, we were unable to attend because of our other obligations.

I am looking forward to my new website! I am hoping that it will be available soon. I will let everyone know when it goes online.

Well, there are several new exhibitions on the horizon. I am currently in the Invitational Exhibit at Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass in Dallas, Texas. I really enjoy working with this gallery.

Also, the opening reception for "Glass Canvases by Terrie Corbett" will be October 19th at Thomas Eads Fine Art from 6:00pm until 9:00 pm here in Tallahassee, FL. I am looking forward to that also.

It has been a busy year so far. We participated in the Chain of Parks Exhibit, Creative Tallahasee (where one of my pieces received an honorable mention), A Glass Act (the exhibit I curated), The Artists' League Exhibit at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts, a one woman exhibit at Fabreana's, and then Chuck and I were the featured artists at South of Soho, an artists co-op, back in May. Later in the summer, I participated in an invitational entitled "Love Your Mother" a discourse on the environment at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts.

"A Glass Act" May through August 2007 Florida Capitol

I am delighted to report that "A Glass Act," the exhibition that I proposed and curated for the Division of Cultural Affairs in the Department of State, was very well received by the public. It featured 16 regional artists. Many visitors were able to see the exhibition this summer when they visited Florida's Capitol. The 22nd Floor Gallery is a beautiful space - glass enclosed with a panoramic view of the city and surrounding areas. I was interviewed by the Tallahassee Democrat, our local paper, and received a two page article in the Sunday Arts Section (it included 5 photos)! The publicity for my own work and for the exhibition itself was greatly appreciated. We also received TV coverage. The exhibit conveyed the diversity in the manipulation of glass from concept through design, technique, and final resolution. The exhibition featured stained glass (as demonstrated in free-standing panels, contemporary lamps and wall pieces), enameled jewelry and larger enameled wall hangings, kiln-fired glass (sculpture, decorative platters, and pieces for the wall), mosaics with fused inclusions and tumbled glass, kiln-fired glass paintings (or glass canvases) using high-fire enamels, lampworked beads, and sandcarved glass sculpture and a sandcarved decorative furniture and wall pieces.

It was a pleasure working with the artists in the exhibition. I think everyone was pleased with the event.

Our 40th Anniversary Celebration

On July 15, 2007, we celebrated our 40th anniversary with a re-affirmation of our vows. The celebration was held at Oven Park in Tallahassee. There were 70 guests in attendance. Music was provided by the Tantalus Classical Guitar Quartet and the event was catered by Bella Bella. Our dear friend, Patty, officiated at the exchange and renewal ceremony. During the reception, my husband surprised me with a Nancy Reid Gunn wax encaustic painting entitled "Song for Another Planet." It was truly one of the great surprises of my life! We had a wonderful time with family and friends. In the photo on the bridge from left to right - my husband, Chuck, me, my Mom, and my brother Monty.

Artists' Grant Retreat at Seaside

It is a beautiful day! The weather has finally turned warmer here! I love it!

We had a great time at an artists' retreat at Seaside several weeks ago. It was stimulating and it was amazing to see the variety of talent - conceptual artists, actors, playwrights, film directors, dancers, singers, painters and sculptors, computer art phenoms and a toy designer.

There were 48 artists from Florida who received a grant for these workshops. 24 of us went to Seaside. We arrived on Friday afternoon and continued non-stop until Sunday. The Creative Capital Group a non-profit arts organization from NYC led the workshops. The NEA and our own FL Dept of State Division of Cultural Affairs were the sponsors. The weather down at the beach was freezing but we stayed warm even as we went from the Lyceum to the board room to the cottages for our break-out sessions. I met and made a lot of new friends. It was fun - we worked hard but enjoyed ourselves. My friend Jaye and I finally made it to the beach which was right across the street the last hour of the last day! She made the photograph on the beach that I have posted on the site!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a nice holiday and that you were able to enjoy family and friends.

Right after Christmas, we took a little trip.

We first headed for Jacksonville and spent the night there. The next morning, we went to St. Augustine and picked out the granite for our new counter tops in the kitchen. It was kind of fun riding around on the golf cart looking at all the different types of granite available. We then headed back to the west coast and St. Petersburg. Since the wedding wasn't until the 30th, went to the museums and did a little gallery hopping while we were at it! We really had a good time.

It is always good to get back home!

Merry Christmas to family and friends

Christmas is upon us. I would like to take this opportunity to wish my family and friends a Very Merry Christmas. I feel so lucky to be a part of this very congenial crew and gene pool!

Charlie is busy making his delicious fruitcakes. They will be a little late this year as he did not get started until a couple of days ago! As the lucky recipients know, they are well worth the wait!

I also want to send a big shout out to Texas (you know who you are)! We miss you and send you love.

Most of the shopping is done and the presents are wrapped. We are looking forward to a very nice holiday. I received an early present -- my new digital camera. I love it! The kitchen cabinets and counter tops are getting a remodel, so that will be a nice addition when the install is complete sometime in January or February.

Well, I'm going to take a break from the errands of the day! See you again soon!

Brrrr! 21 degrees in Tallahassee!

Wow, it was a record-breaking 21 degrees here in Tallahassee today. A beautiful but very cold day! We had our last outdoor show and had to leave the house by 6:30am in order to set up and be ready when the show began at 9am. I had on 3 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, heavy duty socks and shoes and a scarf, hat and large sweater coat with gloves---this is Florida? Are you kidding me?!

We saw a lot of old friends and patrons and made some new friends. Sales were not as "brisk" as the weather, but considering how many people did not come to the event until after 12n, we did ok. We did have a lot of fun with folks buying gifts and trying to keep their significant other in the dark! There is always some "mild trickery" while attempting to make discreet purchases during the holiday season. It's fun.

I had several people tell me that they had seen my work at my newest gallery, Thomas Eads Fine Art, and that they liked it. Always nice to get that feedback!

Well, it's time to think about my own Christmas list. I'd better get started. Happy Shopping Everyone!

Some new work

My husband and I both work in kiln-formed and kiln-fired glass. Some of his new work is posted here.
The 1st photo is a piece from a new series entitled "Etude in Red and Black #2."

The piece to the right, also kiln-formed glass,
is entitled "Aqualuna."

I think they are both very nice pieces. He is represented by three galleries.

The piece below and on the left, is one of my kiln-fired glass paintings entitled "Summer Breeze." It was recently sold at an exhibition at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts.

The next kiln-fired glass painting is entitled "Reflection." It was juried into an International Exhibit entitled "Ignite" where it received a 3rd place award. The exhibition was held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee during the Warm Glass Conference, September 2006 in the Sarah J. Blaine Gallery at Arrowmont.

My work is currently being exhibited at Kittrell Riffkind Art Glass in Dallas, Texas and at Thomas Eads Fine Art in Tallahassee, FL. I feel fortunate to be represented by both of these galleries. If you are in the neighborhood please stop by and see the work.

We will be at the "Just One More" in downtown Tallahassee on December 9th. Come on down, but dress warmly as it will be in the low 20's when the day begins! Yikes!

The Blog Begins . . . . .

Well, the middle of the night seems as good a time as any to begin this journey. The past several months have been busy and exciting.

My husband and I have been working toward our October exhibtion at Lemoyne Center for the Visual Arts for almost a year. The opening was on October 13th and we had a wonderful time. Mom made a photo as we left for the reception.

When the exhibit closed, we began looking forward to our Thanksgiving holiday and the visit from my brother and sister-in-law. We had a very enjoyable visit! We ate a "late afternoon dinner" of turkey, dressing, Mom's great sweet potato casserole, her wonderful cranberry relish, and a green bean casserole. We had a strawberry pineapple and pecan gelatin mold for dessert! Delicious! It was an enjoyable family time, however, we did miss my niece, her husband and their son, who are now in Texas.

After dinner, we walked down to the Indian Mounds. It was a beautiful and glorious day for a walk in the woods. We really enjoyed it. Here is a photo of my brother, and me, and Mom made by my sister-in-law.

We had a very nice Thanksgiving. I hope that you and yours did also.
